![]() The flip of the robbers from antagonists to protagonists challenges society’s tendency to view criminals as the “bad” people who should be denounced and rejected from society. By doing so, he makes the robbers into the heroes of the film rather than the antagonists, instead of the other way around as is typical in most crime stories. In Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh plays on these heist movie tropes while adding in some extra elements of his own to make the robbers especially charming and relatable. Furthermore, the people being robbed tend not to be so innocent themselves, making it difficult to see the criminals in the films as the stereotypical “bad” criminal whose morality is condemned. Heist films are often popular because they include the exciting action of a crime without anybody “getting hurt”- the crime is usually only robbery, and the criminals almost never physically injure others. Considered to be one of the most prominent heist movies of all time, the film rarely strays from the typical tropes of the heist movie genre. The film Ocean’s Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh, focuses on the planning and execution of a casino robbery.
